Education in Bahrain: school stages, curricula and exams

A guide to Bahrain's education system, secondary credit hours, Tawjihiya Bahrain exams, and university admission requirements.

In short

The Kingdom of Bahrain maintains a well-established educational system governed by the Ministry of Education and evaluated by the Education and Training Quality Authority. General education encompasses twelve grades across primary, intermediate, and secondary stages. Secondary schooling operates under a credit hours modular system offering science, commercial, and literary specializations, culminating in the Tawjihiya Bahrain graduation credential. Alongside public institutions, private academies deliver British, American, and International Baccalaureate curricula. University entrance and national scholarship allocations depend on secondary cumulative GPAs, institutional aptitude tests, and international benchmarks including Tawjihiya Bahrain, Cambridge A-Level, SAT, IELTS, and TOEFL.

School stages

Schooling in Bahrain consists of twelve years of structured education organized into three distinct tiers. The academic calendar runs from September through June, divided into two instructional semesters.

  1. Primary Stage (Al-Marhala Al-Ibtida'iyya, Ages 6 to 12): Covers Grade 1 through Grade 6, subdivided into Cycle 1 (Grades 1 to 3, where a single class teacher delivers major subjects) and Cycle 2 (Grades 4 to 6, where subject-specialist educators take over). Instruction covers Arabic, English, mathematics, science, Islamic studies, social studies, physical education, and art.
  2. Intermediate Stage (Al-Marhala Al-I'dadiyya, Ages 12 to 15): Covers Grade 7 through Grade 9. Students deepen subject comprehension across algebra, geometry, biology, chemistry, physics, Arabian Gulf geography, Bahraini history, and computer studies. Successful completion earns the Intermediate Education Certificate.
  3. Secondary Stage (Al-Marhala Al-Thanawiyya, Ages 15 to 18): Covers Grade 10 through Grade 12. Operating under the Credit Hours System (Nizam Al-Sa'at Al-Mu'tamada), students must accumulate a specified number of course credits across core requirements, specialized tracks, and free electives:
    • Unified Science Track: Focuses on advanced mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology.
    • Commercial Track: Concentrates on accounting, economics, business administration, and financial mathematics.
    • Literary Track: Emphasizes Arabic literature, world history, foreign languages, and sociology.

Public schools provide tuition-free instruction in Arabic with compulsory English language learning. Private international schools operate in English, French, or bilingual formats.

Bahrain pioneered educational modernization through the King Hamad Schools of the Future Project, integrating digital learning management platforms, interactive classrooms, and educational technology across all government primary, intermediate, and secondary schools.

Curricula in use

Bahrain features a vibrant private schooling ecosystem regulated by the Directorate of Private Education.

Curriculum Who follows it Main exams
Bahrain National Curriculum (Credit Hours) Majority of students in public state schools Tawjihiya Bahrain
British Curriculum (Cambridge / Edexcel) Private international schools Cambridge IGCSE, Cambridge A-Level
American High School Curriculum Independent private schools American High School Diploma, SAT, AP
International Baccalaureate (IB) Private institutions IB MYP, IB Diploma
Indian CBSE Curriculum Substantial Indian community schools CBSE Class 10, CBSE Class 12

The national curriculum integrates academic knowledge with civic values and digital learning. International schools emphasize external board standards, continuous coursework, and investigative projects.

Exams by stage

Assessment in Bahrain balances continuous semester evaluations with national quality monitoring.

  • Intermediate Examination: Unified examinations at the end of Grade 9 certify completion of basic education and guide track placement in secondary schools.
  • Tawjihiya Bahrain (General Secondary School Certificate): Concludes the secondary credit hours programme at the end of Grade 12. The final graduation result represents a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) calculated across all completed semester courses, rather than a single terminal exam.
  • National Quality Reviews: The Education and Training Quality Authority (BQA) conducts periodic national examinations in Grade 9 and Grade 12 to benchmark systemic educational standards.
  • International Board Examinations: Students in foreign curricula sit Cambridge A-Level or College Board SAT examinations to obtain credentials recognized by the Ministry of Education.

University entry

Higher education in Bahrain encompasses the national public university, specialized polytechnics, and accredited private colleges.

The University of Bahrain (UOB in Sakhir), the flagship national institution, admits secondary graduates based on a composite score combining:

  • Cumulative high school GPA
  • University aptitude assessment and personal interview

Specific colleges establish strict GPA thresholds, with Medicine and Engineering requiring the highest academic averages in the unified science track. Bahrain Polytechnic delivers career-oriented applied technical degrees, admitting candidates based on English and mathematics diagnostic placement testing.

Private universities—including the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland - Bahrain (RCSI Bahrain), the American University of Bahrain (AUBH), and Ahlia University—evaluate applicants using high school diplomas, SAT scores, and English proficiency assessed via IELTS or TOEFL.

Top Bahraini secondary achievers also compete for the national Crown Prince's International Scholarship Program (CPISP). Established to cultivate future national leaders, CPISP sponsors full undergraduate scholarships to universities in the United States and United Kingdom, selecting candidates through cognitive testing, leadership training, and SAT/IELTS benchmarks.

Bahrain also hosts specialized regional academies including the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF) and the Arabian Gulf University (AGU). AGU, funded collaboratively by the GCC member states, operates a established College of Medicine and Medical Sciences in Manama, admitting top secondary graduates across the Gulf based on competitive high school grades, scientific entrance examinations, and interview panels.
