Which sentence avoids a double negative?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. He didn't see anybody in the room.
- Step 1: A double negative uses two negative words to express a single negative idea.
- Step 2: 'He didn't see anybody' uses only one negative.
Answer
He didn't see anybody in the room.
Why not the others: He didn't see nobody in the room.: This uses two negatives and, taken literally, means he saw someone. He never saw nobody in the room.: This also uses two negatives. He didn't see no one in the whole room.: This is another double negative.
