Which post-operative complication most often causes a fever on the first post-operative day?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Atelectasis
- Step 1: The timing of post-operative fever helps point to the cause, the classic 'Ws'. Step 2. Wind (atelectasis) is the commonest cause in the first 24 to 48 hours, followed later by urinary and chest infection. Answer: Atelectasis. Why not the others: Anastomotic leak typically presents around days 5 to 7. Wound infection usually declares itself after day 4 or so. DVT is also a later cause, from around days 5 to 7.
