Evaluate the arithmetic expression following the order of operations (BODMAS): 3/4 + 1/2 ÷ 2/3 - 1/8.
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. 11/8
- Step 1: Perform division first: (1/2) ÷ (2/3) = (1/2) × (3/2) = 3/4. Step 2. Perform addition: 3/4 + 3/4 = 6/4 = 3/2. Step 3. Perform subtraction: 3/2 - 1/8 = 12/8 - 1/8 = 11/8 (or 1 3/8). Answer: 11/8. Why not the others: 7/8 results from performing addition before division; 5/4 forgets the 1/8; 15/8 is an arithmetic error.
