A security patrol vessel sails 12 km due East and then 5 km due South. What is the three-figure bearing of the vessel from its starting port? (Take tan 22.6° ≈ 0.417)
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. 113°
- Step 1: Draw trajectory: from origin, move East along 090°, then South. Step 2. In the right triangle, angle South of East is θ where tan θ = opposite / adjacent = 5 / 12 ≈ 0.417 => θ ≈ 22.6° ≈ 23°. Step 3. Bearing measured clockwise from North: 90° + 23° = 113°. Answer: 113°. Why not the others: 067° is 90° - 23°; 157° is measured from South; 125° is an arithmetic error.
