What can you infer about the fishermen from the passage?

Every evening at dusk, Mr Alder climbed the 112 steps to the lamp room of the lighthouse on Gull Rock. The wind howled around the tower and the sea crashed against the cliffs far below, but he did not mind. He polished the great glass lens until it shone like a diamond, then lit the lamp. Its beam swept across the dark water, warning ships of the dangerous rocks. One stormy night, Mr Alder spotted a tiny light flickering beyond the reef. A small fishing boat was in trouble. Without waiting, he signalled to the lifeboat station on the mainland with his torch. Within the hour, the lifeboat reached the boat and brought the frightened crew safely ashore. In the morning, the grateful fishermen left a basket of fresh fish at the foot of the tower.
