In a small village in the Eastern Cape, a retired teacher named Nomsa rides a bicycle with two large boxes strapped to the back. Inside are about sixty books in isiXhosa and English. Twice a week she visits the village school and the clinic, where children and parents choose books to borrow for a fortnight. The nearest public library is more than forty kilometres away, and few families own more than a handful of books. Nomsa started the project after she noticed that children who read at home did better in class than those who never saw a book outside school. She collects donations from city schools and repairs torn covers with tape and glue. Some of the village children now read aloud to their grandparents in the evenings. "A book is only useful if someone opens it," Nomsa says. "My job is to bring the books to the people who would otherwise not meet them."

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. She saw that children who read at home did better

  1. Step 1: She saw that children who read at home did better in class than those who never saw a book outside school.
Answer
She saw that children who read at home did better.
Why not the others: The village school had closed its library that year: the passage does not say the school library closed. She wanted to earn money by selling books to families: the books are borrowed, not sold. The government asked her to start the book service: no government request is mentioned.
