Complete the sentence about Philippine Declaration of Independence with the correct year: The Philippine revolutionary government had been constituted as a democratic republic on January 23, ______ and did not recognize the treaty or American sovereignty.
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. 1899
The Philippine Declaration of Independence was proclaimed by Emilio Aguinaldo on 12 June 1898 in Cavite el Viejo. Spain then ceded the islands to the United States in the Treaty of Paris, but the Philippine revolutionary government, set up as a democratic republic on 23 January 1899, did not accept that treaty or American rule. The years 1889 and 1896 are earlier than the 1898 treaty, and 1924 is long after the war it led to in 1899.
