Why is Iraq suitable for solar power?
Iraq receives strong sunshine for most of the year, and in summer the sun can shine for more than twelve hours a day. Experts believe this makes the country well suited to solar power. Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity and produce no smoke. However, the panels work less well when they are covered with dust, and in a country with frequent dust storms they need regular cleaning. The cost of installing panels has also fallen in recent years. Several projects have been planned to add solar plants to the national grid, which would reduce dependence on oil and gas for electricity.
