What was the only event at the beginning?
The first Olympic Games were held in Olympia, Greece, more than 2,700 years ago, in honour of the god Zeus. Only men could compete, and the only event at first was a short foot race. Over time, more sports such as wrestling, chariot racing and the long jump were added. The games were banned in the fourth century by a Roman emperor. In 1896 a French educator, Pierre de Coubertin, helped to bring them back in Athens. Today, athletes from more than two hundred countries take part in both Summer and Winter Games, and women compete in many sports.
