Baghdad's old Mutanabbi Street, close to the Tigris, has been a centre of the book trade for hundreds of years. Every Friday, booksellers set out tables piled with books on history, poetry and science, and readers come from all over the city to browse and talk. In 2007 a car bomb badly damaged the street, killing many people. Afterwards, the booksellers and their customers rebuilt the shops, and today the Friday market is once again crowded. For many Iraqis the street is a symbol of the love of learning that has survived difficult times.
