Where does water go when it soaks into the ground?
Water on the Earth is always moving. The heat of the Sun makes water in seas, rivers and lakes evaporate and rise into the air as vapour. High in the sky, the vapour cools and condenses into tiny drops that form clouds. When the drops become heavy enough, they fall as rain, snow or hail. Some of this water runs into rivers and returns to the sea, and some soaks into the ground, where plants and wells can use it. Then the cycle begins again. Without this cycle, there would be no fresh water for plants, animals and people.
