A gas in a rigid container is at 200 kPa and 300 K. It is cooled to 150 K. What is the new pressure?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. 100 kPa
- Step 1: At constant volume P₁/T₁ = P₂/T₂. Step 2. P₂ = 200 × 150 ÷ 300 = 100 kPa. Answer: 100 kPa. Why not the others: 400 kPa is what you get if you invert the temperature ratio. 50 kPa is what you get if you square the temperature ratio. 200 kPa is what you get if you assume the pressure stays constant.
