What do scientists think about the reasons for dreaming?

Scientists still do not agree on why humans dream. One theory suggests that dreams help the brain to sort and store the memories of the day, while another proposes that dreams allow us to practise responses to threats in a safe setting. Most vivid dreams occur during a stage of sleep in which the eyes move rapidly under the eyelids, and during this stage the muscles of the body are normally relaxed so that we do not act out our dreams. People who are woken during this stage can usually remember their dreams, but those who are woken at other times rarely can. Although the purpose of dreams remains uncertain, researchers agree that regular sleep is essential for health.
