10 dm³ of a gas at 400 K is brought to 500 K at constant pressure. What is the new volume?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. 12.5 dm³

  1. Step 1: Charles's law: V₁/T₁ = Vā‚‚/Tā‚‚ (T in kelvin). Step 2. Vā‚‚ = 10 Ɨ 500 Ć· 400 = 12.5 dm³. Answer: 12.5 dm³. Why not the others: 8 dm³ is what you get if you invert the temperature ratio. 2.5 dm³ is what you get if you give only the size of the change in volume. 10 dm³ is what you get if you assume the volume stays constant.
