A nurse must give 1.0 L of fluid over 8 hours through a drip set that delivers 20 drops per mL. What drip rate is needed, to the nearest whole number?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. 42 drops/min
- Step 1: Total drops = 1000 mL x 20 = 20,000 drops. Step 2. Minutes = 8 x 60 = 480. Step 3. Rate = 20,000 / 480 = 41.7, so about 42 drops/min. Answer: 42 drops/min. Why not the others: 125 is the rate in mL per hour, 2500 is drops per hour, and 21 halves the correct rate.
