Temperature falls by about 6.5 degrees Celsius for every 1,000 metres of height. If it is 30 degrees Celsius at sea level, what is the temperature at the summit of Mount Olympus (about 1,950 metres) in the same conditions?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. About 17 degrees Celsius
- Step 1: The height is 1.95 thousand metres, so the fall is about 1.95 times 6.5 degrees. Step 2. That is about 12.7 degrees, and 30 minus 12.7 is about 17 degrees. Answer: About 17 degrees Celsius. Why not the others: 24 uses only one thousand metres, 11 uses a fall that is too large, and 43 adds the fall instead of subtracting it.
