Scientists have long known that people who sleep badly find it harder to learn. During sleep the brain does not simply rest. It replays the events of the day and moves important memories into long-term storage. In one study, students who slept after studying a list of words remembered more of them the next day than students who stayed awake for the same period. This does not mean that sleep alone creates knowledge: students still have to study first. But it suggests that the common habit of studying all night before an exam may be less useful than a few hours of study followed by a full night of rest.
