Why does the writer mention that the driver knows the name of every child who borrows?
Every Thursday, a converted bus stops outside the market in Hamid's town. Its shelves hold about two thousand books, and the driver, Mrs Salma, knows the name of every child who borrows from it. Last year the town council planned to remove the service to save money, but more than three hundred residents signed a letter asking for it to stay. The council changed its decision and promised to keep the bus for at least two more years. Hamid, who now reads two books a month, says the bus did more than lend books: it made reading a habit for his whole street.
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. To show that the service has a personal and friendly side
- Step 1: The detail shows how well the driver knows the people she serves. Answer: To show a personal and friendly side. Why not the others: The passage does not say that few children borrow, does not link the names to the council, and says nothing about why Thursday was chosen.
