You have a 3-litre jug and a 5-litre jug. Fill the 5-litre jug, pour into the 3-litre jug until full, empty the 3-litre jug, pour the rest across, refill the 5-litre jug and fill the small jug. How much water is left in the 5-litre jug?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. 4 litres

  1. Step 1: After the first pours the 3-litre jug holds 2 litres and the 5-litre jug is empty. Refill the large jug to 5 litres. Step 2. The small jug needs only 1 more litre to be full, so 5 - 1 = 4 litres remain. Answer: 4 litres. Why not the others: 3, 2 and 5 do not account for the 2 litres already in the small jug.
