A snail climbs 3 m each day and slips back 2 m each night. On which day does it first reach the top of a 10 m wall?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: A. Day 8

  1. Step 1: Each full day and night gains 1 m, so after 7 days the snail is at 7 m. Step 2. On day 8 it climbs 3 m to reach 10 m before it can slip. Answer: Day 8. Why not the others: Day 10 ignores that it escapes during the day, and days 7 and 9 give the wrong height.
