Every Friday evening the square near Jamshid's home turns into a night market. By six o'clock, sellers have set up long tables under strings of small lights. One seller offers warm bread, another sells hand-painted bowls, and a third repairs old watches while customers wait. Jamshid helps his aunt, who sells dried fruit. She says the secret of a good stall is to let people taste before they buy. Although the market is busy, there is little rubbish at the end of the night, because each seller must clean the space around the stall. Last month the town council counted more than two thousand visitors on a single Friday. Jamshid thinks that number would be even higher if the market stayed open past ten o'clock, but the neighbours prefer quiet nights.
