What did students do under the librarian's scheme?
A school librarian noticed that many students read only when a teacher required it. She started a scheme in which each student chose any book, read for fifteen minutes at the start of the lesson, and then told a classmate one thing about it. No marks were given. After a year, the library recorded that borrowing had doubled, and several teachers reported that students wrote longer answers in class. The librarian says she cannot be sure that the scheme caused the change, because the school also bought new books during the same year.
