Which conclusion is best supported by the passage?
A school librarian noticed that many students read only when a teacher required it. She started a scheme in which each student chose any book, read for fifteen minutes at the start of the lesson, and then told a classmate one thing about it. No marks were given. After a year, the library recorded that borrowing had doubled, and several teachers reported that students wrote longer answers in class. The librarian says she cannot be sure that the scheme caused the change, because the school also bought new books during the same year.
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. Borrowing increased, but the scheme may not be the only reason
- Step 1: The passage reports an increase and a doubt about the cause. Step 2. Only the option 'Borrowing increased, but the scheme may not be the only reason' keeps both facts. Answer: Borrowing increased, but the scheme may not be the only reason. Why not the others: The other statements go beyond the evidence.
