According to the passage, why do some schools return comments before marks?
Research on classroom feedback suggests that a mark alone teaches a student little. A score tells a student where they stand, but not what to do next. By contrast, a short comment that names one strength and one specific step for improvement gives the student something to act on. Teachers who give both a mark and a comment often find that students read only the mark and ignore the comment. For this reason, some schools now return work with comments first and release the marks only after students have responded to them.
