Hydrochloric acid of pH 2.00 is diluted by a factor of 10 with water. What is the new pH?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. 3.00
- Step 1: Concentration of H+ falls from 0.01 to 0.001 mol dm-3. Step 2. . Answer: 3.00. Why not the others: pH is logarithmic: a factor of 10 changes it by exactly 1; 1.00 goes in the wrong direction; 3.30 would be a dilution of 20.
