What is the IUPAC name of CH3CH(CH3)CH2CH2OH?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: C. 3-methylbutan-1-ol
- Step 1: The longest chain containing the carbon bearing -OH has four carbons: butanol. Step 2. Number from the end nearest the OH group: OH on C1, methyl on C3. Answer: 3-methylbutan-1-ol. Why not the others: numbering from the other end gives a higher number for the OH, which is not allowed; the OH on C2 would be a different structure; isopentanal would be an aldehyde.
