If 70,000 adults were followed and 40 per cent mainly ate plant-based diets, how many ate plant-based diets? (Passage: Plant-based diets)
A large study followed 70,000 adults for eleven years and found that those who ate mainly plant-based diets had a 10 per cent lower risk of heart disease than those who ate meat daily. The researchers adjusted for age, smoking and exercise. They noted, however, that people choosing plant-based diets often have higher incomes and better access to healthcare, factors that were only partly measured. The authors therefore describe the result as consistent with a protective effect rather than proof of one.
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: D. 28,000
- Step 1: Take 40 per cent of 70,000. Step 2. 0.4 x 70,000 = 28,000. Answer: 28,000. Why not the others: 30,000 is 3/7 of the total; 7,000 is 10 per cent; 42,000 is 60 per cent.
