Of 80 students, 28 take the bus, 44 take the train and 10 do neither. How many do both?

Answer and explanation

Correct answer: D. 2

  1. Step 1: Students doing at least one = 80 - 10 = 70; use total = A + B - both. Step 2. 28 + 44 - 2 = 70 = 80 - 10, so 2 do both. Answer: 2. Why not the others: 42, 5 and 0 each come from skipping the overlap or the 'neither' group in the working.
