On a speed–time graph a vehicle accelerates uniformly from 0 to 10 m/s in 4 s, then travels at a constant 10 m/s for 6 s. What is the total distance?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. 80 m
- Step 1: Stage 1: triangle ½ × 4 × 10 = 20 m.
- Step 2: Stage 2: rectangle 10 × 6 = 60 m.
- Step 3: Total = 20 + 60 = 80 m.
Answer
80 m.
Why not the others: 100 m: the first stage was treated as constant speed. 60 m: the first stage was ignored. 40 m: only the first stage was counted, as constant speed.
