Add the parts, divide the total by the number of parts, then multiply.

Inverse proportion

If more workers are used, the time falls: workers x days stays constant.

Average speed

Total distance divided by total time; not the mean of the speeds.

Average speed for equal distances

Mixtures

Concentration = total amount of solute / total volume.

Work rates

If A finishes in a days and B in b days, together they take

Simple and compound interest

Simple:

Exponent rules

Quadratic formula

Multiply:

Mean, median, mode

Mean: sum/number; median: middle value; mode: most frequent.

Comparison questions

Simplify both columns to the same form before deciding; if a variable could change the answer, say it cannot be determined.

Verbal analogy method

State the relationship in one sentence, then test each option with the same sentence.

Common analogy relations

Part to whole, tool to task, cause to effect, degree, opposite, creator to creation.

Sentence completion clues

Look for contrast words (although, but) and cause words (because, so) to predict the missing word.

Odd word out

Find the category shared by three words, then pick the one that is different.

Reading comprehension: main idea

The main idea covers the whole passage, not just one detail.

Reading comprehension: inference

An inference is supported by the text but not stated directly.

Vocabulary in context

Replace the word with each option and see which keeps the meaning of the sentence.

Time and distance

Distance = speed x time; convert km/h to m/s by dividing by 3.6.

Number patterns

Check differences, ratios and alternating patterns before guessing.

Time management

Quantitative section: do easy items first and return to hard items.
