Percentage change
Change divided by the original value, times 100. A rise from 800 to 920 is 120 / 800 = 15%.

Percentage of a number
Convert to a decimal and multiply: 40% of 250 = 0.4 x 250 = 100.

Successive percentage changes
Multiply the factors, do not add the percentages: +20% then -20% gives 1.2 x 0.8 = 0.96.

Mean
The sum of the values divided by how many there are.

Median
The middle value of an ordered list. With an even number of values, take the mean of the two middle ones.

Speed, distance and time
Speed = distance / time. Distance = speed x time.

Average speed over a round trip
Total distance divided by total time, not the mean of the two speeds.

Area of a circle
Area = pi x r squared. The radius is half the diameter.

Circumference of a circle
C = 2 x pi x r, which is pi x the diameter.

Pythagoras' theorem
In a right triangle with legs a and b and hypotenuse c: a squared + b squared = c squared.

The three angles add up to 180 degrees.

Half of the base times the height.

Number of favourable outcomes divided by the total number of equally likely outcomes.

Probability without replacement
Multiply the chances, reducing the totals after each draw: 3/8 x 2/7 for two reds from 3 red and 5 blue.

Number of ordered choices
Choosing a chair and a different deputy from n people: n x (n - 1).

Rules for powers
Same base: add exponents when multiplying, subtract when dividing. (2^5 x 2^3) / 2^6 = 2^2.

Solving a linear equation
Do the same operation on both sides until the unknown stands alone.

Quadratic with solutions p and q
x squared - (p + q)x + pq = 0. The sum of the solutions is p + q and the product is pq.

Arithmetic sequence
Each term is the previous one plus a constant difference.

Geometric sequence
Each term is the previous one times a constant ratio.

Data sufficiency method
Test each statement alone first. Then test them together only if neither alone is enough.

Ratio problems
Add the parts of the ratio, divide the total by the sum of the parts, then multiply by each part.

Simple interest
Interest = principal x rate x time. It does not grow with earlier interest.

Sets with overlap
Both = (set A) + (set B) - (those in at least one). Those in at least one = total - neither.

Synonym strategy
Replace the word in a sentence with each option. Use the roots and the tone of the word as clues.

Sentence completion strategy
Find the clue words such as 'although', 'despite' and 'so', which tell you if the blank agrees or contrasts.

Read the question first, find the claim in the text, and check each option against the text, not your own opinion.

Weakening an argument
Find the option that gives another cause or breaks the link between the evidence and the conclusion.
