According to legend, tea was discovered in China more than four thousand years ago, when leaves from a wild tree blew into a pot of boiling water. Whatever the truth of the story, tea was certainly being drunk as medicine during the Han dynasty. By the Tang dynasty it had become an everyday drink, and a scholar named Lu Yu wrote the first book devoted to it. Tea reached Europe in the seventeenth century and quickly became fashionable among the wealthy. Because it was heavily taxed, it was also smuggled in large amounts. Only when taxes were lowered did tea become a drink for ordinary families.
