What has happened to the number of wild pandas?
The giant panda is one of the best-known animals in the world, and for many years it was close to extinction. Its main food, bamboo, grows in only a few mountain areas of western China, and farming and roads had cut those forests into small pieces. In recent decades China has created reserves and connected forests with green corridors so that pandas can move between them. Scientists also help the animals breed in research centres. As a result, the number of wild pandas has risen, and the animal is no longer officially classed as endangered. Experts warn, however, that climate change may reduce the bamboo in the future.
