Which sections do visitors photograph most often?
The Great Wall is not a single wall but a series of walls built by different dynasties over more than two thousand years. The earliest sections were made of earth and wood. The parts that visitors photograph most often, near Beijing, were built much later, during the Ming dynasty, with brick and stone. Their purpose was to protect the northern border and to control trade and movement along it. Today the wall is damaged in many places, and weather, farming and tourism all play a part. Restoration work is under way, but experts say that it must be done carefully, because rebuilding with modern materials can destroy the historical value of a section.
