What was special about the call made in 1973?
The first mobile phone call was made in 1973 by an engineer in New York, who rang a rival to say he was speaking from a handset. The device weighed more than a kilogram and needed ten hours to charge for a call of thirty minutes. It was another ten years before phones went on sale to the public, and even then their price made them toys for the rich. Prices fell as the technology improved, and by the end of the 1990s ordinary people in many countries owned one. Today the same device is a camera, a map and a bank, and few people can remember how they lived without it.
