A student investigates the effect of pH on the activity of an enzyme. Which control would best show that it is the enzyme causing the reaction?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. A tube set up identically, but with enzyme that was boiled and cooled, to show the enzyme is needed
- Step 1: A control changes only the factor being tested for. Step 2. Boiling denatures the enzyme, so if no reaction occurs in that tube, the reaction in the test tube is due to the active enzyme. Answer: boiled enzyme. Why not the others: the other tubes test amount of enzyme, temperature and buffer instead of the role of the enzyme.
