The eigenvalues of the matrix with rows (4, -1); (0, -2) are
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: A. -2 and 4
- Step 1: The matrix is upper triangular, so the eigenvalues are its diagonal entries. Step 2. They are 4 and -2. Answer: -2 and 4. Why not the others: 2 and -8 is what you get if you give the trace and determinant. -4 and 2 is what you get if you change the signs. 4 and -1 is what you get if you include the off-diagonal entry.
