Which cerebrospinal fluid pattern is typical of bacterial meningitis?
Answer and explanation
Correct answer: B. Many neutrophils, low glucose and raised protein
- Step 1: Pyogenic infection draws neutrophils into the cerebrospinal fluid. Step 2. The bacteria and cells consume glucose, and the protein rises. Answer: Neutrophils, low glucose and high protein. Why not the others: A lymphocytic picture with normal glucose is viral. A normal sample excludes meningitis. Uniform blood with xanthochromia suggests subarachnoid haemorrhage.
