What surprised Maria about her job?
When Maria Costa took a post as the only doctor on a small Scottish island, she expected quiet evenings and plenty of reading. Instead, her phone rings at all hours. The islanders, she says, think nothing of calling her at midnight about a sore throat, but equally they leave a fresh loaf on her doorstep without being asked. 'You are never anonymous here,' she laughs. The isolation has been harder than she imagined; in winter, storms can cut the ferry service for days, and she has learned to stock the surgery with extra supplies. Even so, she says she has no plans to leave and would feel lost back in a city hospital.
