Many travellers notice that their first night in a hotel is restless. Researchers have found a reason: when we sleep somewhere unfamiliar, one half of the brain stays partly alert, as if standing guard. Brain scans of volunteers showed that the left hemisphere responded more strongly to small sounds on the first night, and volunteers woke more quickly. By the second night, this effect had faded. The finding may explain why people who travel frequently still feel tired after arriving, and it has led some scientists to suggest packing a familiar pillow or blanket to reduce the effect.
