How did Harton save its shop?
Faced with the closure of its only shop, the village of Harton did something unusual: it bought the shop itself. Residents raised £120,000 by selling shares at £50 each, and more than 400 people took part. The shop now employs two part-time staff, sells local produce and hosts a weekly coffee morning. Manager Priya Nair says it has become the heart of the community. 'People came in to buy milk and found they had a reason to stay and talk,' she says. Not everything has been easy; bills for heating are high, and the shop only just breaks even. Even so, no one is talking about closing it again.
