Why are some parents concerned?
A growing number of primary schools are introducing coding lessons, but not always with computers. At St Anne's, six-year-olds learn the basics by giving instructions to a classmate who pretends to be a robot. 'They quickly see that if they leave out a step, the robot gets stuck,' explains teacher Hannah Price. Only later do the children move on to tablets. Some parents worry that screen time is being encouraged, but Price argues that the unplugged stage builds the logical thinking that makes later programming easier. Early results are promising: pupils who started this way scored higher on problem-solving tasks than those who did not.
