What has caused bee numbers to fall?
Bees are often thought of simply as honey producers, but their role in agriculture is far greater. Around a third of the food we eat depends on pollination, much of it carried out by bees. In recent years, populations have fallen in several countries, with scientists blaming a combination of pesticides, loss of habitat and disease. Some farmers have begun planting strips of wild flowers beside their crops to provide food for bees. Research suggests that the extra pollination may more than make up for the land taken out of production, although results vary from farm to farm.
