Few of us now write letters, which is exactly why they have become so special. Psychologist Dr Helen Frost studied people who received handwritten notes and found that recipients valued them far more than senders predicted. Senders worried that their handwriting was untidy or that their words were awkward; recipients cared only that someone had taken the time. 'The effort itself is the message,' says Frost. She recommends that anyone hesitating should simply begin with a few sentences. Her study also found that those who wrote letters reported feeling closer to the recipient afterwards, suggesting that the benefit goes both ways.
