At the Brookfield Academy, lessons begin at ten rather than nine. The change was introduced after research suggested that teenagers' body clocks make early mornings particularly difficult. Head teacher Alan Marsh admits he was sceptical. 'I assumed the students would simply stay up later,' he says. Yet after a year, attendance has improved and the number of pupils arriving late has halved. Teachers also report that pupils are more alert in the first lesson. Not everyone is convinced; some parents say the later finish makes after-school activities difficult. Marsh says the school is looking at shorter lunch breaks to address this.
