What limitation do satellites have?
Despite centuries of exploration, most of the ocean floor remains a mystery. Satellites can measure sea surface heights and thus estimate the shape of the seabed, but they miss fine detail. Only about a quarter of the seafloor has been mapped at high resolution. A global project called Seabed 2030 aims to complete the picture by the end of the decade, using ships, autonomous vehicles and data donated by fishing fleets. Project director Jamie McMichael-Phillips says the map will help with everything from predicting tsunamis to planning wind farms. Critics, however, doubt that the deadline can be met with current funding.
