What advice do experts give?
Every summer thousands of young people travel overseas to volunteer in orphanages and schools. Their intentions are good, but aid organisations are increasingly critical of the practice. Short-term volunteers, they argue, often lack relevant skills, and children form attachments that are broken when the volunteers leave. Some projects have even been accused of encouraging poverty because they depend on a supply of visitors. Experts now advise would-be volunteers to choose placements which use their specific skills and last several months, and to ask whether the work would be done by local people if they were paid.
