In rural Kenya, nine-year-old Wanjiru walks eight kilometres to school each morning, leaving home before dawn. Her journey is typical of many pupils whose communities are far from the nearest classroom. Charities have tried supplying bicycles, but roads often turn to mud in the rains. A different approach is now being tested: lessons by radio, which allow children to study near home on the days when the walk is impossible. Teacher Joseph Otieno admits the method cannot replace a classroom. 'A radio can't see a child's face when she is confused,' he says, 'but it is far better than missing school altogether.'
