What is happening to the cliffs?
The cliffs along England's east coast are retreating at an average of more than a metre a year, and in some places far faster. For the village of Skelby, the sea is now only forty metres from the church. Residents were once promised sea walls, but the government now says that protecting every settlement is unaffordable. Instead, funding is offered to help people move. Resident Jean Walters has lived in her home for fifty years and is reluctant to leave. 'You can't put a price on memories,' she says. Officials counter that doing nothing would cost far more in the end, both in money and in safety.
